It’s the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who and Steven Moffat has promised big, big things this year (at one point even mysteriously saying, “it’s not going to be just one thing”). This teaser promises big adventure, teases us with the mystery of who Clara Oswin is, and takes a step towards a horror. All of which is very, very exciting.
However.
There’s one very big thing missing from this teaser. There’s absolutely no reference to Dorium Maldavor’s final words from Series 6:
“On the Fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the Eleventh, when no creature can speak falsely or fail to answer, a question will be asked — a question that must never be answered: Doctor Who? Doctor Who? Doctor Who?!“
The first half of this series has teased this question and even used this question in the climax and resolution of Asylum of the Daleks — the same episode that introduce everyone’s new favorite companion. Which leaves us faithful Whovians doing exactly what showrunner Steven Moffat wants us doing: Scratching our heads as he shake our fists and scream at our monitors, “MOFFFFFAATTT!!”
If we’re going to speculate (which we are, because that’s a Whovian’s nature), I suspect that we’re not going to see the Fields of Trenzalore in Series 7. I’m starting to wonder if the second half of Series 7 won’t be dedicated to Clara and solving the riddle she is, pushing the question that can’t be answered to first half of Series 8, which would/could/will take place later this year (climaxing with the 2013 Christmas special). This is all speculation of course, but that’s half the fun of Doctor Who.
